Southend-on-Sea Borough Council would like to invite businesses to come and hear more about how to recruit and train an apprentice. From talking to local businesses we are aware that many businesses are interested in recruiting but may have found it difficult in the past or just need more information about how to proceed.

Certainly in Southend we have both levy payers and non-levy payers who are not recruiting and yet this can be a very effective way of building your workforce with skilled staff to meet your growth plans.

Currently levy payers, who have a staffing bill of £3m, are paying 0.5% of their staffing costs into a Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account. After 24 months if this is not spent it is returned to Government, so we are encouraging all levy payers to use this training budget for either existing or new staff or we can help you to transfer up to 25% of the levy to other non-levy payers. This could be a company in your supply base or a 3rd sector organisation in order to support your local community.

Non levy payers only pay a very small proportion of the training costs (5%) and there are a wide range of courses that can support the development of your staff.

Why not come along to hear more from the marketplace or from the range of speakers which will include:

  • Existing employers – including SBC
  • Apprenticeship providers – SEC, SACC, STC and others
