The Digitalisation of Medicines Manufacturing Challenge Fund is supporting businesses with capital infrastructure innovation projects to improve medicine production methods. The aim is to encourage the application of digitally-enabled methods or technologies that can improve the manufacture of medicines for human use.

The desired outcome is to enable existing medicines manufacturing operations to improve their scope, efficiency and effectiveness through the application of new digital technology.

Proposals must show how digital technology can integrate or enhance the steps in a manufacturing and supply chain. They should also justify any future improvements and the reason for selecting the specific enhancement that the applicant is planning.

Innovate UK (IUK) is administering the funding, which derives from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF). Up to £8 million has been allocated to fund innovation projects in this competition. A project’s total costs must be between £2 million and £4 million.

Projects can be led by a UK business of any size. Single or collaborative applications are welcome.

IUK is looking to fund a portfolio of projects, across a variety of technologies, markets and technological maturities, focusing on investment aid for research infrastructures. The competition will fund capital infrastructure, including refurbishment and equipment.

The competition opens on 10 September 2018 with a deadline for registrations of 3 October 2018 and a closing date for full applications a week later, on 10 October 2018.
