In 2021 there were 4.4 million homes provided by registered providers of social housing. These include rented properties, supporting housing, and low cost homes. As property owners housing associations are facing an increasing need to improve the energy efficiency of housing they manage. The new Building Regulations ends the installation of natural gas boilers from 2035. While, from 2028 all privately rented homes must achieve a minimum Energy Performance Certificate of ‘C’ – the government is consulting on a target date for all the UK’s social housing stock to achieve this standard.
Retrofit is the process of changing existing buildings so they’re more energy efficient. There are government grants to encourage innovation, and the number of UK companies manufacturing or retrofitting insultation products and more renewable heating sources is growing. However, according to a 2020 National Housing Federation poll, 34% of housing associations have reported concerns around capacity in supply chains. The Retrofit Academy is working in partnership with Essex County Council to deliver multiple career development opportunities and organisational training in the local area. Fit for Retrofit is an interactive programme that has been developed specifically for the social housing sector and covers the areas required to be ‘organisation ready’ for retrofit.
